Coca-Cola picks citrus for new containers
From Atlanta Business Chronicle
The Coca-Cola Co. has apparently found a whole new way to make its fruit drinks seem even fruitier.
The company, maker of Minute Maid and Fanta, is planning to make drink boxes, cartons and packaging from paper and cardboard containing citrus fiber and juices. According to a Sept. 16 trademark filing, Coke plans to call the new packaging a “Peelpack.”
Norman Marsolan, director of the Renewable Bioproducts Institute at Georgia Tech, said he was not familiar with the Peelpack. “However, adding fiber from such sources as citrus peels to packaging may be an excellent way of using and recycling fiber that may not have value added use,” he said. “The making of what may be a more sustainable product accompanied with potential waste reduction should be applauded.”
